  • Vocalist Nellie McKay Makes Hollywood Bowl Debut with All-Star Cast Including Sandra Bernhard and Bill Henderson

WEDNESDAY, JULY 20, AT 8 PM

Generously sponsored by The Patina Group

Jazz at the Bowl continues this summer on Wednesday, June 20 at 8 p.m. with Play It Again: The Movie Music of Woody Allen, bringing to life the movie music of Woody Allen. Celebrate classic American jazz and swing with music by Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter, Woody Herman, and Django Reinhardt performed by an all-star cast of guest artists, including Sandra Bernhard, and featuring clips on the video screens from Allen originals such as Radio Days, Annie Hall, Zelig and Sweet and Lowdown.

Broadway and cabaret singer Ann Hampton Callaway has been dazzling audiences since her performance in the hit musical Swing. A versatile vocalist who among her fans counts Barbara Streisand, Carly Simon and Wynton Marsalis, Callaway is also a talented composer, who wrote and sang the theme to the TV hit series The Nanny.

With her laser-beam wit and quirky sensibility that allows vocalist Nellie McKay to skip from hip hop to jazz pop, this songwriter, musician, comic performer has been winning critics and fans since she release her debut Get Away From Me in 2003. Born in 1984 in London, the daughter of an English director and American actress, she grew up in Harlem, and has used her love of jazz, '60s Motown and hip hop to great effect. She will next be cast as Polly Peachum in the Broadway adaptation of The Threepenny Opera opposite Alan Cumming. She makes her Hollywood Bowl debut at this concert.

For 25 years, Sandra Bernhard has been challenging fans and critics with her knife-edged humor, satire and emotive performances on film, television and stage. Her critically acclaimed 1998, one-woman Broadway hit, I'm Still Here...Damn It! which played the Booth Theater, had critics raving. Created and conceived by Bernhard, the show first ran for five months off-Broadway at New York's Westbeth Theatre, where it garnered ecstatic reviews. Since her first film accolades in 1983 in Martin Scorseses', The King of Comedy featuring Jerry Lewis and Robert De Niro, Bernhard has since appeared in numerous films including Inside Monkey Zetterland, Hudson Hawk and more recently, Dinner Rush. Throughout her career, Bernhard's formidable presence has also had a place on television. From 1991-1996, she portrayed Nancy on Roseanne, and has had guest starring roles on Ally McBeal, Chicago Hope and Will & Grace. She has appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, as well as The Tonight Show, Rosie O'Donnell and The View. She hosted the season premiere of MadTV and the Bravo network recently profiled her career. In 2001, Bernhard hosted her own talk show, The Sandra Bernhard Experience for A&E television.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 37th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and close to one million admissions have been recorded. In February 2005, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue at the 16th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; it is no wonder that the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
