  • THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC PRESENTS NEW EXHIBIT HONORING FORMER MUSIC DIRECTOR CARLO MARIA GIULINI AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL'S ERNEST FLEISHMAN GALLERY

  • Collection Highlights Maestro's Passion, Intensity and Devotion

OPEN NOW AND RUNS THROUGH JANUARY 30, 2006

In honor of the late Carlo Maria Giulini (1914-2005), who served as its Music Director from 1978 to 1984, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association presents a new exhibit highlighting the renowned maestro's career in Los Angeles. The exhibit is located at the Ernest Fleischmann Gallery in the Alfred E. Mann Los Angeles Philharmonic Center, adjacent to Walt Disney Concert Hall, and runs through January 30, 2006. Admission is free. Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen dedicated the three concerts on opening weekend at Walt Disney Concert Hall to the memory of Giulini.

Giulini's six years with the Los Angeles Philharmonic were marked by passionate, poetic music-making in collaboration with an orchestra which he truly loved. Born in Barletta, in southern Italy, Giulini came to the Philharmonic as an established conductor of symphony and opera, well-known for his lyricism, intensity, and devotion to music.

In 1978, Ernest Fleischmann convinced Maestro Giulini to join the Los Angeles Philharmonic as its music director. Giulini developed a relationship with the orchestra that was both demanding and inspiring. According to violinist Alexander Treger, "He was very proud of the orchestra. He always treated musicians as partners."

Giulini left the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1984 because of the illness of his wife, Marcella. They returned to Milan, and he accepted occasional offers to conduct in cities within a close range of Milan, finally retiring fully in the late 1990s. Carlo Maria Giulini died in Brescia, in northern Italy, on June 14, 2005.

The Gallery opens for public viewing prior to LA Phil concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall as follows: 6:30-7:30 p.m. before 8:00 p.m. concerts, 12:30-1:30 p.m. before 2:00 p.m. concerts, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. before 11 a.m. concerts. The Ernest Fleischmann Gallery is located on the second floor of the Alfred E. Mann Los Angeles Philharmonic Center at 151 South Grand Avenue, accessible by elevator from the Artists' Entrance at the corner of 2nd Street and Grand Avenue, or from the garden entrance into the third floor of the Philharmonic Center.

THE ERNEST FLEISCHMANN GALLERY (a gift of the Dunard Foundation), adjacent to Choral Hall in the Alfred E. Mann LA Philharmonic Center honors former Executive Vice President and Managing Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Ernest Fleischmann, who held that post for twenty-nine years. The gallery is devoted to exhibits related to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its history. The curator is Carol Merrill-Mirsky, the Los Angeles Philharmonic's historian and also curator at the Hollywood Bowl Museum.

THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC ASSOCIATION, under Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, presents the finest in orchestral and chamber music, recitals, new music, jazz, world music and holiday concerts at two of the most remarkable places anywhere to experience music-Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to a 30-week winter subscription season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil presents a 12-week summer festival at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In fulfilling its commitment to the community, the Association's involvement with Los Angeles extends to educational programs, community concerts and children's programming, ever seeking to provide inspiration and delight to the broadest possible audience.
