Conductor David Robertson, who is Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and French-born pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard spent many years working together with Pierre Boulez's Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris, "bring their affinity for contemporary music to their performances of older works."
Born in Santa Monica, California, conductor DAVID ROBERTSON was educated at London's Royal Academy of Music, where he studied French horn and composition before turning to orchestral conducting. Prior to his Saint Louis Symphony appointment, Robertson was Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon and Artistic Director of that city's Auditorium from 2000-2004, the first time that one artist held both posts. From 1992-2000, he was Music Director of the Ensemble Intercontemporain in Paris, and from 1985-1987, resident conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. A master of communication and an inspirational force both on and off the podium, he has been praised by the press as "that rare combination of passion and intellect that draws musicians and audiences." His extensive command of orchestral and operatic repertoire, and his dynamic interpretive skills, has allowed him to forge strong relationships with major orchestras worldwide. Robertson has made numerous recordings for Sony Classical, Naive, EMI/Virgin Classics, Atlantic/Erato, Neuma, Adès Valois, and Naxos labels.
Pianist PIERRE-LAURENT AIMARD, born in Lyon, France, enjoys an internationally celebrated career, which transcends traditional boundaries. Aimard performs throughout the world each season with the major orchestras under conductors including Pierre Boulez, Christoph von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Simon Rattle, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Franz Welser-Möst. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2001 and maintains a regular relationship there as well as with the Konzerthaus Vienna, the Philharmonie Cologne, the Berlin Philharmonie, and the South Bank Centre, London. He is Artist-in-Residence at the Salle de Concerts Grande Duchesse Josephine-Charlotte, Luxemburg in 2005/06, its opening season; through professorships in Paris and Cologne, as well as in series of concert lectures and workshops worldwide, he sheds an inspiring and very personal light on music from all periods. He was recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist Award in Spring 2005; and in Spring 2006 he plays the world premiere performances of Peter Eötvös' CAP-KO (dedicated to Béla Bartók) - a new concerto for acoustic piano, keyboard, and orchestra.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, under Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, presents the finest in orchestral and chamber music, recitals, new music, jazz, world music and holiday concerts at two of the most remarkable places anywhere to experience music - Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to a 30-week winter subscription season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil presents a 12-week summer festival at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In fulfilling its commitment to the community, the Association's involvement with Los Angeles extends to educational programs, community concerts and children's programming, ever seeking to provide inspiration and delight to the broadest possible audience.
