Composer and Violist Brett Dean conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group in the U.S. premieres of two works by young composers from his homeland, Songs Found in Dream by Liza Lim, and Chromatophore by Anthony Pateras, on Tuesday, October 17, 8:00 p.m. at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Dean also conducts the Group in his own composition, Pastoral Symphony, and joins members of the Philharmonic as violist in his quintet, Voices of Angels. Lim's Songs Found in Dream, was commissioned by the Salzburg Festival and was premiered by Klangforum Wien on August 21, 2005. Pateras' Chromatophore, for eight amplified strings, was commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and had its world premiere at Iwaki Auditorium in Melbourne in September 2003. Also on the program is the U.S. premiere of Pateras' Continuums and Chasms: Movement VII, performed by Pateras.

Australian composer and violist BRETT DEAN studied in Brisbane before moving to Germany in 1984 where he was with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for 15 years. Brett returned to Australia in 2000 to concentrate on his compositional activities, championed by conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Markus Stenz and Daniel Harding. One of the most internationally performed composers of his generation; Dean draws from literary, political or visual stimuli in his works, which include a number of compositions inspired by paintings of his partner Heather Betts. Dean began composing in 1988, initially working on film, radio and improvisatory projects. He became established as a composer in his own right through works such as Ariel's Music, a clarinet concerto which won an award from the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers, the piano quintet Voices of Angels (1996) and Twelve Angry Men (1996) for the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic. In 2001 he won the Paul Lowin Song Cycle Prize for Winter Songs, and in 2002/3 was Artist in Residence with the Melbourne Symphony and Composer in Residence at the Cheltenham Festival. Brett Dean performs throughout the world as soloist, chamber musician and conductor and has given numerous premieres of solo and chamber works by some of the leading composers of our time. He has also conducted ensembles such as the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin and Birmingham Contemporary Music Group.
Internationally acclaimed composer LIZA LIM was born in Perth, Australia, in 1966. Her compositions explore a range of resources from opera and the orchestra to visual arts installations, often including non-Western instruments and have been performed by some of the world's most eminent ensembles. Notably, she was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic to write the large orchestral work, Ecstatic Architecture to celebrate the inaugural season of the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2004. She has been composer-in-residence with the Sydney Symphony in the last two years producing the works Immer Fliessender, Flying Banner and The Compass (jointly commissioned by Bavarian Radio and Musica Viva). Other recent achievements include being featured in the Festival d'Automne in Paris in 2005, which commissioned three new works (In the Shadow's Light for the Kairos Quartett; The Quickening for soprano Deborah Kayser and Qin YANG Chunwei and Mother Tongue, premiered by the Ensemble InterContemporain. Lim earned her Doctor of Philosophy from the The University of Queensland, her Master of Music from The University of Melbourne, and her Bachelor of Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts. She has been a guest lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer School, the University of California San Diego, Cornell University, Getty Research Institute, major Australian universities and at IRCAM Agora Festival. Liza Lim is the guest curator for the twilight concert series of the 2006 Adelaide Festival. She has been awarded a DAAD Künstlerprogram Artists Residency to live and work in Berlin during 2007-08.
ANTHONY PATERAS focuses on expanding the organizational possibilities of sound through an exploratory approach to timbre, form and performance. Live, he appears regularly throughout Europe and Australasia in various guises: on prepared piano in the Pateras Baxter/Brown trio, on voice & electronics in duo with Robin Fox, in the mutant hip hop quartet Beta Erko or as a conductor of his own notated works. He has released numerous albums, recording full length releases for Tzadik, Editions Mego, Synaesthesia and Quecksilber, and additionally writes music for film. As a composer, his notated music has been performed world wide by performers such as the Dutch Radio Kammerorkest, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Flux String Quartet, Slave Pianos and percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson. Recently, he has performed at the Next Music Festival, Bratislava (2005), Why Note Festival, Dijon (2005), Lieux Communs, Paris (2005), Noise & Glamour, Moscow (2005) Melbourne Festival (2005), Netmage05 Festival, Bologna (2005) What Is Music? Festival, Australia (2002 -2005), Liquid Architecture, Melbourne (2004), Festival de Musiques Innovatrices, St-Etienne (2004), Bomb the Space,Wellington (2004) and Alt.Music, Auckland (2004). He is a founding member of the electro-acoustic sextet Twitch, and has organized numerous concerts of exploratory music in Melbourne as curator of the Articulating Space series and festival. Pateras has also written music for short films which have screened at festivals in the US and Canada (Telluride, Hawaii, Mill Valley, Montreal), South America (Rio, Sao Paulo), Russia (Message to Man), Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Darwin) and Europe (Cannes, La Huesca, Dresden, Bilbao, Edinburgh, Berlin), winning the Klangmusik Preis for best score at the 2003 Dresden Film Festival.

When available, choral bench seats ($15) will be released for sale to selected Philharmonic, Colburn Celebrity Recital, and Baroque Variations performances beginning at noon on the Tuesday of the second week prior to the concert. A limited number of $10 rush tickets for seniors and full time students may be available at the Walt Disney Concert Hall Box Office two hours prior to the performance.
