The Escovedo family, one of the world's most versatile and gifted musical families, comes together to collaborate for a very special holiday celebration at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Friday December 22 at 8 p.m. The Escovedo Family's Latin Holiday Celebration blends Pete Escovedo's signature Latin jazz sound with daughter Sheila E.'s famous percussion, while the thoughtful melodies and storytelling of brother Alejandro add warmth and variety to this festive event.
Collectively, the Escovedo family is an enduring musical family dynasty that continues to deliver a colorful and powerful concoction of music. For the past 30 years, Pete Escovedo has performed and toured with many respected artists, while making a name for himself identified by his own unique sound on the timbales. Brother Alejandro, the consummate storyteller, possesses a wide palette of music prompting Rolling Stone to remark "Alejandro Escovedo is in his own genre" - high words of praise at a time when most music is easily categorized. Pete Escovedo's percussionist daughter Sheila E., whose roster is a who's who of the industry, keeps the rhythm solid on drums and vocals. On congas and vocals, first-born son Juan Escovedo brings flavorful pop and R&B to the Escovedo ensemble, and youngest son Peter Michael assists his father in leading the band, electrifying the crowd on bongos, drums and vocals.
The Deck the Hall series of holiday concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall continues with an all-new edition of the annual family-friendly Holiday Sing-Along on Saturday, December 23, at 2 p.m.; legendary gospel group the Blind Boys of Alabama belt out holiday classics on Saturday, December 23, at 8 p.m.; and Lyle Lovett gives two rockin' performances on New Year's Eve, December 31, at 7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
The amazing talents of the ESCOVEDO FAMILY cross cultural and musical barriers every time they perform. Native Californian Pete Escovedo discovered and cultivated a love and passion for music, which soon led him to embrace Latin jazz and pass it on to his sons and daughters as his father did for him. Pete has performed and toured with such respected artist as Mongo Santamaria, Bobby McFerrin, Cal Tjader, Woody Herman, Billy Cobham, Boz Scaggs, Arturo Sandoval, Poncho Sanchez, and Chick Corea to name a few. Pete and his brother Coke were the founders of the history-making band Azteca, as well as members of early Santana. Today, the Escovedo Family leads one of the top orchestras in the country, performing their own brand of Latin jazz. Daughter Sheila E. has performed with artists such as Ringo Starr, Prince, Jennifer Lopez, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, George Duke and countless others. Son Juan Escovedo has collaborated with such noted artists such as Patti Labelle, Lou Bega, En Vogue, Herbie Hancock and many more, captivating audiences with his versatility. Youngest son Peter Michael, who received a Emmy nomination for his work as Music Director & Producer for the Wayne Brady show, assists Pete in leading the band, and his roster includes Mariah Carey, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Nicks, George Michael, MD for Martin Short Show. Alejandro Escovedo is a consummate storyteller held in the highest esteem by his peers. His 2006 release Boxing Mirror received critical acclaim. The Escovedo Family's contribution to the community is exemplary as they take pride in giving back by assisting families and children in need by introducing the power of healing through music.
