Christoph von Dohnányi, recognized as one of the world's pre-eminent orchestral and opera conductors, returns to Los Angeles for two weeks of concerts in February with the Los Angeles Philharmonic leading the complete symphonies by Brahms at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Brahms' Symphonies Nos. 1 and 3 are presented on Thursday, February 15 at 8 p.m.; Friday, February 16 at 11 a.m.; Saturday, February 17 at
8 p.m.; and Sunday, February 18 at 2 p.m. Symphonies Nos. 2 and 4 are offered on Thursday and Saturday, February 22 and 24 at 8 p.m. Symphony No. 4 is featured on Friday, February 23 at 8 p.m., in a Casual Fridays evening at which audience and orchestra members alike come attired in comfortable clothes, and subscribers are invited to meet the musicians at a post-concert reception.
Dohnányi, long known as a specialist in the German Classical and Romantic repertoire, brings new interest to some of the most well-known orchestral scores. In addition to guest engagements with the major opera houses and orchestras of Europe and North America, his appointments have included opera directorships in Frankfurt and Hamburg; principal orchestral conducting posts in Germany, London, and Paris; and his legendary 20-year tenure as music director of The Cleveland Orchestra.
"Upbeat Live," a free event open to all ticket holders, is held one hour before each performance in BP Hall (except on February 16 when it begins at 9:45 a.m. in the main auditorium). Michael Walsh, former music critic of Time magazine, discusses the February 15 -18 programs, and musicologist Eric Bromberger discusses the February 22 - 24 concerts.
CHRISTOPH VON DOHNÁNYI continues his posts as chief conductor of the NDR Sinfonieorchester, which he brings to Carnegie Hall and on tour to Japan, and Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonia Orchestra, having been principal guest conductor there since 1994. During his years as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra, Dohnányi led the orchestra in a thousand concerts, 15 international tours, 24 premieres, and the recording of over 100 works. Immediately upon the completion of his tenure there in 2002, Dohnányi made a great sweep of long-awaited and triumphant guest appearances with orchestras in Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and New York. Dohnányi conducts frequently at the world's great opera houses, including Covent Garden, La Scala, the Vienna State Opera, Berlin, and Paris. He has been a frequent guest conductor with the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival, leading the world premieres of Henze's Die Bassariden and Cerha's Baal. Dohnányi returned to Salzburg in the summer of 2001 for a new production of Ariadne auf Naxos, and in October 2001 he conducted Die Frau ohne Schatten at Covent Garden. Dohnányi also appears with the Zurich Opera, where in recent years he conducted Die Schweigsame Frau, a double bill of Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex and Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle, and new productions of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera and Berg's Wozzeck. Dohnányi has made many critically acclaimed recordings for London/Decca with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic. With Vienna, he recorded a variety of symphonic works and a number of operas. With the Cleveland Orchestra, his large and varied discography includes concert performances and recordings of Wagner's Die Walküre and Das Rheingold, the complete symphonies of Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann, symphonies by Bruckner, Dvorak, Mahler, Mozart, Schubert, and Tchaikovsky, and among many others, works by Bartók, Berlioz, Ives, Varèse, and Webern.
