  • PAUL OAKENFOLD MAKES HIS ONLY 2007 LOS ANGELES APPEARANCE;

    LOCAL DJ AND PRODUCER CARMEN RIZZO MAKES GUEST APPEARANCE

    SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, AT 7 PM

    Media sponsor: KCRW 89.9

    Underworld, one of the seminal electronic acts of the past three decades, perform for the very first time at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, September 9, at 7 p.m. Underworld showcases tracks off of their first album in five years, Oblivion with Bells. The longtime duo, vocalist Karl Hyde and guitarist Rick Smith, headline this spectacular evening with their unique blend of dub, techno and classic house. KCRW DJ Jason Bentley hosts.

    Underworld has led the worldwide dance scene since the late '80s. They have released six studio albums including their latest effort, Oblivion with Bells. In the U.S., the band captivated audiences with "Born Slippy," a track made popular in the 1996 hit indie film by Danny Boyle, Trainspotting. Underworld's performance at the Hollywood Bowl is one of just a handful of U.S. performances where fans can expect new material to be debuted alongside deep grooves and some classics from the Underworld jukebox.

    Joining Underworld for this night of electronica heavyweights is DJ extraordinaire, producer, and Grammy nominee, Paul Oakenfold. Oakenfold has toured all over the world including an unprecedented show at the Great Wall of China. His 2004 album, Another World, certified Gold by the RIAA, makes Oakenfold one of the biggest selling dance artists of all time. He has worked with countless superstars such as Pharell Williams, Nelly Furtado and Ice Cube, and remixed the likes of U2, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez, Salt-N-Pepa and The Cure.

    Joining Oakenfold is special guest, producer, engineer, composer and recording artist, Carmen Rizzo, who adds exotic electronic Persian and Indian beats to this truly inspirational evening. This is the last show in the 2007 KCRW World Festival series at The Hollywood Bowl.

    The last five years has seen seminal electronic artist UNDERWORLD release their 1992-2002 anthology album, compose two major film scores (Anthony Minghella's Breaking and Entering and Danny Boyle's 2007 Sunshine), publish a typographic journal In The Belly of Saint Paul, release a series of pioneering digital-only releases, internet-radio broadcasts, and groundbreaking live web-tv broadcast in partnership with Apple and Frankfurt's techno giants Cocoon. During all of this action, guitarist Rick Smith and vocalist Karl HydeDF, with the aid of trusty laptops, a couple of home studios, Abbey Road's legendary facilities and a Pig Shed, have been carefully developing ideas for the new album Oblivion with Bells, their first release in five years and sixth studio release of their career. Oblivion with Bells draws heavily on Rick and Karl's vast array of musical influences (Nick Drake, Def Mix, Ricardo Villalobos, Can, James Holden, Eno) and experiences performing worldwide to create a truly unique Underworld journey.

    PAUL OAKENFOLD has been touted as one of the world's leading DJ/remixers by such prestigious music publiciations as Rolling Stone, BPM, Remix and many more. He has received Grammy nominations for Best Electronic/Dance Album for both A Lively Mind (2007, Maverick Records) and Creamfields (2004, Thrive Records). Paul has worked with a plethora of stars including Brittany Murphy, Pharrell Williams, Grandmaster Flash, Perry Farrell, Nelly Furtado, Ice Cube, Tricky and Hunter S. Thompson (his last recording before he passed away). His music has been tapped for national advertisement campaigns by prestigious corporations such as Diet Coke, Saah, Hummer, and Toyota. Paul Oakenfold's 2004 mix album Another World has reached gold status in sales making it one of the biggest selling dance albums of all time. His music has also been consistently licensed in major films including The Matrix Reloaded, Die Another Day, Planet Of The Apes, The Bourne Identity and Shrek II. TV credits include Alias, Big Brother and Las Vegas. As a touring musician, Oakenfold has DJ'd in hundreds of places around the world.

    CARMEN RIZZO, the two-time Grammy nominee & underground darling, has been a frequent figure in album credits for producing, mixing, remixing, programming, and co-writing on a range of influential artists ranging from Seal, Alanis Morissette, Coldplay, BT, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cirque du Soleil, and Pete Townshend of The Who. Carmen recently composed his first film - The Power of the Game from acclaimed British director Michael Apted (Coal Miner's Daughter, Gorillas in the Mist). Carmen also has a credible career as a recording artist under his own name. His current CD The Lost Art of the Idle Moment (The Lab/Universal) is his first solo album featuring collaborations with a wide range of guest vocalists including Esthero, Jem, Kate Havnevik, Ladybug Mecca (The Digable Planets), Grant Lee Phillips, Thomas Heinrich, Alpha and Deidre Dubois. Songs from the album have been licensed to TV shows The O.C., Windfall, and Commander in Chief. Taste-makers Jason Bentley, Nic Harcourt and Anne Litt from KCRW championed the disc before he even had a record deal. The album debuted at #2 on their album chart as well as Sirius & XM Satellite radio.

    One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 39th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and close to one million admissions have been recorded. In February 2007, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the third year in a row at the 18th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
