TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, AT 8 PM

Los Angeles Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Lionel Bringuier conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group to open the Philharmonic's 2007/08 Green Umbrella new music series on Tuesday, October 9, at 8 p.m., at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Composer's Choice program features music by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, with guest artists Jennifer Koh, violin; Steven Schick, percussion; and Jean-Baptiste Barrière, video artist. Of the three Saariaho works - Six Japanese Gardens, NoaNoa and Graal théâtre - two have a video/film element and all are being performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group for the first time in its history. Additionally, the program includes Dallapiccola's Piccola musica notturna, also being performed by the New Music Group for the first time.

This fall marks the beginning of Lionel Bringuier's two-year-year tenure as Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In addition to the Green Umbrella program, Bringuier also leads two Toyota Symphonies for Youth programs as well as neighborhood and community concerts during the 2007/08 season.

The Philharmonic's groundbreaking Green Umbrella series offers five concerts during the 2007/08 season, featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group led by Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen and guest conductors. The 2007/08 season lineup includes three world premieres, one U.S. premiere and four West Coast premieres.

An Upbeat Live pre-concert event takes place in Walt Disney Concert Hall's BP Hall one hour prior to the concert, and is free to all ticket holders. Steven Stucky, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and Consulting Composer for New Music for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, hosts.

Conductor LIONEL BRINGUIER begins his two-year appointment as Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in September 2007. Bringuier was selected through a competitive process that included over 150 applicants from around the world. In his first season as Assistant Conductor, Lionel Bringuier conducts many of the Philharmonic's education and community concerts. He will lead other concerts as scheduled, including subscription concerts at the world-renowned Hollywood Bowl, the Philharmonic's summer home, and a Green Umbrella new music series concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Bringuier also serves as the cover conductor for Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen or guest conductors throughout the orchestra's subscription season and on tour. In addition, his duties include serving as a member of the planning team for the educational series Toyota Symphonies for Youth.

Violinist JENNIFER KOH is recognized in the U.S. and abroad for her ability to fuse intensity of temperament with a classical poise and elegance. In the words of the New York Times she is a "fearless soloist," who has a formidable capacity for "living through" the music she performs on stage. Equally at home in the classic and contemporary repertoire, Koh revels in the unexpected. During the 2006/07 season she was heard as a soloist with the Oregon Symphony, Marin (CA) Symphony, Spokane Symphony, New Jersey Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Whatcom (WA) Symphony, Honolulu Symphony, Orchestra 2001, Greenwich Symphony, Tallahassee Symphony and Annapolis Symphony. Her recital engagements included performances in Philadelphia at the Kimmel Center, in San Francisco at the Herbst Theater, in San Juan (PR), at Oberlin College and in New York at the 92nd Street Y. Koh's recording for the Cedille label titled "Violin Fantasies" has been praised for its sense of adventure and brilliant musicianship. Her latest recording is a CD devoted to the complete Schumann Sonatas for Violin and Piano with Reiko Uchida. Born in Chicago to Korean parents, Koh currently resides in New York City. She is a graduate of Oberlin College and an alumna of the Curtis Institute, where she worked extensively with Jaime Laredo and Felix Galimir. Koh is grateful to her private sponsor for the generous loan of the 1727 ex-Grumiaux ex-General DuPont Stradivari she uses in performance.

His computer piece Chréode, published by Wergo, won the Prix de la Musique Numérique of the Concours International de Musique Electro-acoustique of Bourges in 1983. He composed the music of 100 Objects to Represent the World, a show by Peter Greenaway presented at the Salzburg festival in 1997, and later performed all around the world. He conceived and directed the release of the CD-ROM Prisma, the musical universe of Kaija Saariaho, which won the Grand Prix Multimédia Charles Cros 2000. Barrière has also released Autoportrait in motion, a sound and image interactive installation, commission of the Contemporary Art museum of Zurich, and presented in various museums around the world. This piece is part of Reality Checks, a cycle that he is developing with Pierre-Jean Bouyer for the realization of images, consisting of installations, and performance pieces involving solo instrumentalists and live transformation of sound and image. Barrière has also produced with choreographer Jean-Claude Gallotta Les Fantômes du temps, a multimedia show for 11 dancers and one percussionist.
