The Los Angeles Philharmonic continues its 2007/08 Neighborhood Concert series with a free performance at St. Thomas the Apostle Church on Monday, April 21, at 8 p.m. This concert is also presented by the Byzantine Latino Quarter Foundation. Los Angeles Philharmonic members Mitchell Newman and Johnny Lee, violins; Dana Hansen and Minor Wetzel, violas; and Daniel Rothmuller and Jason Lippmann, cellos, perform a program that includes the Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia for Violin and Viola, and Brahms’ Sextet in B-flat.

Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist Mitch Newman opens the program with an introduction about Themes and Variations, which includes an audience sing-a-long. The St. Thomas the Apostle School Flute students begin the concert with a special performance of Theme and Variations on “Las Mañanitas.”

Admission to the concert is free. Ticket requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The one-hour concert performance is presented without an intermission. More information is available by calling St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 323.737.2424 or 323.737.3325 (en español). Parking is available at 2727 West Pico Blvd (corner of Pico and Fedora) and also at 15th St. and Mariposa (free).

The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s neighborhood concerts in the community include free orchestra, chamber music and jazz concerts in churches, community centers and other local venues around Southern California.  The Los Angeles Philharmonic has been presenting free neighborhood concerts for the past 16 years, as part of the organization’s dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association’s Neighborhood Concert series, created in 1991, encourages involvement in the classical arts within the increasingly diverse communities of greater Los Angeles. The events take place in churches, schools, and other venues throughout Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, under Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, presents the finest in orchestral and chamber music, recitals, new music, jazz, world music and holiday concerts at two of the most remarkable places anywhere to experience music — Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to a 30-week winter subscription season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil presents a 12-week summer festival at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In fulfilling its commitment to the community, the Association’s involvement with Los Angeles extends to educational programs, community concerts and children's programming, ever seeking to provide inspiration and delight to the broadest possible audience.
