What began as a folk-inspired band 40 years ago has turned into an internationally recognized musical force with six Grammy wins along the way. The legendary Irish music band, the Chieftains, celebrate their 40 years of success at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on July 12 and 13, 2002. The LA Scots Pipe Band will make a special guest appearance; fireworks cap the musical milestone evenings.
The world's foremost proponents of Irish music, the CHIEFTAINS are returning to the Hollywood Bowl to celebrate their 40th anniversary year. The Chieftains were a success virtually from the beginning with their music weaving a spell around audiences in Ireland and later in England, where they quickly became popular as both a performing and recording act. The group's big breakthrough in America occurred in 1975 when they provided the music for Stanley Kubrick's movie Barry Lyndon. Since then, the band has performed with hundreds of artists - from Eddie Vedder and Bob Dylan to Joni Mitchell and Bryan Adams. The Chieftains' last performance at the Bowl was in 1993.
Having completed his tenure as Associate Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., RANDALL CRAIG FLEISCHER is currently Music Director of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic in Hudson Valley, New York, and is also Music Director of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, as well as Artistic Director/Principal Conductor of the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Fleischer has taken innovative and bold steps as a music director by focusing in the area of outreach for orchestra. Pre-concert lectures, open rehearsals, musical scholarship funds for underprivileged children, more varied and contemporary programming, and an entirely experimental and exploratory series are among the programs he has established. Mr. Fleischer was a conducting fellow at Tanglewood in 1989 and the Assistant Conductor of the American Symphony in New York City from 1986 to 1989. While working toward his Master of Music degree at the Indiana University School of Music, he was Chorus Master of the Indiana University Opera Theater from 1983 to 1985. He received his Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and has studied conducting privately with Otto-Werner Mueller and in master classes with Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Ricardo Muti, and others.
One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of just under 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and, in 1991 gave its name to The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. A hit from its very first season, the Hollywood Bowl has remained popular and accessible to a wide cross-section of Southern California's diverse population. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "Open House at the Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 34th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and last summer, close to one million admissions were recorded. It is no wonder that the Bowl's summer music festivals have become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers and Disneyland.
