Gerard Schwarz, music director of the Seattle Symphony, returns to the Hollywood Bowl to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic in an all-Mozart program on July 23 and 25, at 8 p.m. The evening begins with the timeless favorite Eine kleine Nachtmusik and concludes with Symphony No. 36 in C major, "Linz." Rising star and pianist Stewart Goodyear joins the orchestra for the Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor.

Backbeat Live pre-concert events take place at the Patio, one hour prior to the Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday concerts; free to all ticket holders. The July 25 session features an interview with conductor Gerard Schwarz.

This past season, conductor GERARD SCHWARZ celebrated his 20th year with the Seattle Symphony and his 26th year as Music Director of the New York Chamber Symphony. He also assumed the position of Music Director of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra last year. He is Music Director Emeritus of New York's Mostly Mozart Festival, after serving for twenty years as its music director. A graduate of The Juilliard School, Schwarz began his conducting career in 1966. Over the next decade, he was appointed Music Director of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, the Eliot Feld Dance Company, the Waterloo Festival, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony have released 80 compact discs for various labels. He last appeared at the Bowl in 1994.

Pianist STEWART GOODYEAR toured the United States in recent years with the Toronto Symphony and collaborated with the National Arts Center Orchestra of Canada. He has also appeared with The Cleveland Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, as well as the Montreal and Vancouver symphonies. In addition to appearing at and touring with the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, he has appeared at festivals at Caramoor, Santa Fe, and most recently at the Ravinia Festival. Goodyear is also a composer and frequently performs his own works, including, Variations on "Eleanor Rigby" and a Piano Sonata. He has composed works commissioned by the Toronto Youth Symphony and for the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. A native of Toronto, he recently graduated from The Juilliard School and previously studied at The Curtis Institute of Music. Goodyear is making his Bowl debut with these concerts.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of just under 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and, in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. A hit from its very first season, the Hollywood Bowl has remained popular and accessible to a wide cross-section of Southern California's diverse population. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "Open House at the Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 34th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and last summer, close to one million admissions were recorded. It is no wonder that the Bowl's summer music festivals have become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers and Disneyland.
