The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band with special guest James Moody headlines a night of big band music at the Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday August 26, 2009 at 8pm. Acclaimed ensembles Roy Hargrove Big Band with special guest Roberta Gambarini and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band also perform.

The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band formed in the summer of 1998 to perform Dizzy Gillespie's classic big band repertoire and continue the wonderful jazz legacy left by the late John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie. The group’s arrangements have a 40’s and 50’s vintage flair that continue to delight audiences everywhere. The band is comprised of many Gillespie alumni including his closest collaborator James Moody, his former musical director Slide Hampton, Jimmy Heath, Claudio Roditi, Antonio Hart, Douglas Purviance, and executive director John Lee, Gillespie's longtime bassist. Saxophonist James Moody began captivating audiences in the 1940s when he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s ground-breaking orchestra. In 1949 he recorded his masterpiece “Moody’s Mood for Love,” one of the iconic jazz solos. In 1985, he received a Grammy nomination for his work on Manhattan Transfer's Vocalese.

Grammy-winning trumpet player Roy Hargrove, a frequent guest of the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, makes an appearance at the Hollywood Bowl with his own band the Roy Hargrove Big Band. Hargrove won a Grammy Award 1997 with his Cuban based band Crisol and a Grammy Award in 2003 for the collaboration Directions in Music with Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker.

Jazz Vocalist Roberta Gambarini began performing in jazz clubs in Italy at 17. In 1998 she moved to the United States and surprised the jazz world with a third place finish in the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition. In 2007, she was nominated for a Grammy Award for her album Easy to Love. In 2008, she made her major label debut with the album You Are There, a collection of 14 songs, with legendary pianist Hank Jones. Roberta Gambarini was recently voted Rising Star Female Vocalist of the Year in the 2008 DownBeat Critics Poll.

Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, an 18-piece jazz ensemble, has four Grammy-nominated albums. Gordon Goodwin is a Grammy and multiple Emmy-award winner for his composing and arranging. The band has played on the soundtrack of The Incredibles, The Majestic, and other movies.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 42nd season. In January 2009, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the fifth year in a row at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
