The Chamber Music Society Presents Two Four-Concert Series Throughout the 2009/10 Season
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2009, AT 8 PM
The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2009/10 Chamber Music Society series begins with a performance on Tuesday, November 3, that features Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and pianist Norman Krieger, performing Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op. 11 and Brahms’ Piano Quartet in A major. Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic also perform Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 95.
Composed in 1797, Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op. 11 was written at a time when he was defining his voice as a composer. The first movement has a muscularity that is uncharacteristic of Haydn or Mozart and the frequency of sudden loud notes followed by sudden soft notes was a life-long stylistic element of Beethoven.
Three years after Beethoven composed the Opus 11 work, he began writing string quartets. He wrote the String Quartet Op. 95 in 1810 at a time of turmoil in his life and subsequently gave it the subtitle: “Serioso.” This piece was out of character for the time and originally performed for small groups of people. It is seen as an experiment with compositional techniques Beethoven would draw on later in his life.
A student of Beethoven and Schubert, Brahms was a master of the keyboard with a uniquely dramatic manner that separated his work from the musicians of his time. The Piano Quartet in A major is wholly Brahms, but it also speaks to the influence of Beethoven and Schubert.
The LA PHIL's 2009/10 Chamber Music Society Series offers eight distinct programs throughout the season, including concerts with renowned soloists such as André Watts (Jan. 12), Piotr Anderszewski (Jan. 26), Lars Vogt (Mar. 16), and Emanuel Ax (Mar. 30). Additional dates with Members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic are November 10, February 16, and April 6.
