About this Performance
Elim Chan brings her nuanced baton and sensitive ear to a program of fairytale-inspired symphonic works, sparking wonder and adventure. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade features stories about characters like Aladdin, Sinbad, and Ali Baba, chronicling stormy sea voyages with swirling string melodies, royal festivals with brass fanfares, and pure romance with sensitive shifts in dynamics. One of the greatest violinists of our time, Augustin Hadelich, makes his long-awaited return to perform Prokofiev’s ominous and energetic Second Violin Concerto. A frequent performer of the piece, Hadelich calls it “so evocative that it’s hard not to imagine witches riding around broomsticks, tender love scenes, and wild chases.”
