In anticipation of Floating Points’ one-time performance of Promises, his critically acclaimed collaboration with Pharoah Sanders, at the Hollywood Bowl on September 20, 2023, LA Phil Humanities presents a meditative evening of film, poetry, and music celebrating Pharoah Sanders’ creative spirit and his deep influence on the Los Angeles creative community in collaboration with Luaka Bop and Floating.

Promises Through Congress (2021) is a collaboration between visual artist Julie Mehretu, composer Floating Points (Sam Shepherd), and filmmaker Trevor Tweeten. This 46-minute film features Mehretu’s expansive painting Congress (2003), and the acclaimed 2021 album Promises by Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, and the London Symphony Orchestra, released by Luaka Bop. Having premiered at The Whitney, it has screened at The Broad in LA, the Barbican Centre in London, and streamed on the Criterion Channel.

Promises at the Bowl • WED / SEPT 20
On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, Floating Points will lead an all-star ensemble in the first and only performance ever of Promises, one of the most celebrated albums in recent years, at the Hollywood Bowl. The lineup features artists handpicked by Sanders himself, including Shabaka Hutchings, Dan Snaith (Caribou), Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and Kara-Lis Coverdale, among others, conducted by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson.
