About this Performance
Experience the full scope of big band when some of the greatest groups going showcase the genre’s range from swanky tradition to fluid modernity.
Maria Schneider is a multiple Grammy winner and the recipient of the 2019 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship. Her vision for big-band music is steeped in jazz history and informed by what’s next, and her beautifully imaginative and 21st century approach has led the Maria Schneider Orchestra to become one of the genre’s most vital acts. In celebration of their 30th anniversary, the band will play highlights from throughout their career.
The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra carries the paradigm-shifting work of the great bandleader into the future. The winners of multiple Grammys themselves, they’ve counted everyone from Billie Holiday and Lester Young to Joe Williams in their ranks, and they can stomp out the blues and go slick and refined at the drop of a dime.
The multiple-Grammy-nominated Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, who were the Bowl’s resident jazz orchestra from 1999 to 2001, kick off the evening.
