About this Performance
Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony is undeniably one of the most recognizable compositions in classical music, if not all music. The opening phrase sounds the alarm for the blitz of bravado from every section of the orchestra, as the insistent rhythm plays throughout the work, remaining in its listeners’ ears long after the music stops.
Santa Monica-born conductor David Robertson kicks off the night with the Coriolan Overture—a Shakespearean tale of turmoil, revenge, and remorse—followed by Beethoven’s exuberant Triple Concerto performed by a talented tag team of young soloists. Ha-young Choi, winner of the 2022 Queen Elisabeth Competition for Cello, joins the virtuosic duo—pianist Sunwook Kim and violinist Clara-Jumi Kang—in a must-see performance.
