About this Performance

With its innovative orchestration and ferocious polyrhythms, The Rite of Spring helped set the stage for 20th century music. Teddy Abrams leads the LA Phil in Stravinsky’s ballet score alongside the Russian composer’s Violin Concerto—a striking work that started as a simple sketch on a napkin. Leila Josefowicz sparks spontaneity and joy throughout the concerto; in reviewing her 2018 performance, The New York Times reported, “She made the most of each moment, playing with brightness, mystery, eagerness—whatever the music called for.”

The evening kicks off with a World War II arrangement of “The Star-Spangled Banner” of which Stravinsky explained: “It is a desire to do my bit in these grievous times toward fostering and preserving the spirit of patriotism in this country that inspires me to tender this my humble work to the American people.”
