Beginning with an intense scene of a hero’s funeral, Mahler’s huge Second Symphony transports us on a remarkable journey, delving deep into life and death from every possible perspective, from terrifying to transcendent. As Beethoven did in his Ninth, Mahler adds voices near the end, barely audible at first, but then ringing out along with massive orchestral forces in a towering climax, as the soul is raised into immortality.
